Rosacea

DEFINATION

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, other skin problems or natural ruddiness.

Rosacea can affect anyone. But it's most common in middle-aged women who have light skin.

There are four subtypes of rosacea. Each subtype has its own set of symptoms. It is possible to have more than one subtype of rosacea at a time. They are as follows:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR)
  2. Papulopustular (or acne) rosacea
  3. Rhinophyma
  4. Ocular rosacea

Types of rosacea

The four types of rosacea are :

  1. Subtype one, known as Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR), is associated with facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels.
  2. Subtype two, Papulopustular (or acne) rosacea, is associated with acne-like breakouts, and often affects middle-aged women.
  3. Subtype three, known as Rhinophyma, is a rare form associated with thickening of the skin on your nose. It usually affects men and is often accompanied by another subtype of rosacea.
  4. Subtype four is known as Ocular rosacea, and its symptoms are centered on the eye area.

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS OF ROSACEA

SYMPTOMS OF ROSACEA :-

  • Facial redness.

Rosacea usually causes a persistent redness in the central part of your face. Small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks often swell and become visible.

A number of factors can trigger’s, including :

  • Hot drinks and spicy foods

DIAGNOSIS

No specific test is used to diagnosis rosacea. Instead, doctor relies on the history of symptoms and an examination of skin. may have tests to rule out other conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema or lupus. These conditions can sometimes cause signs and symptoms similar to those of rosacea.

If symptoms involve eyes, doctor may refer to an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) for evaluation.
