Jaundice

Introduction

Jaundice is a condition in which there is a high level of bilirubin in blood which causes the skin, whites of the eyes and mucous membranes to turn yellow. Bilirubin is a yellow-orange bile pigment. Jaundice occurs when there is accumulation of excess bilirubin. The normal serum levels of bilirubin are less than 1 (mg/dL). When serum bilirubin levels exceed 3 mg/dl clinical presentation of jaundice with peripheral yellowing of the eye sclera, also called scleral icterus, is seen. As there is increase in serum bilirubin levels, the skin will progressively change colour ranging from dark yellow to green, the green colour is due to biliverdin.
