STOMACH – LOVE YOUR GUT

Gastrointestinal diseases affect the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. There are two types: functional and structural. common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, food poisoning, and diarrhea.

Common stomach problems are-

1) CONSTIPATION

Constipation is a functional problem, that makes it hard for you to have a bowel movement (or pass stools), the stools are infrequent (less than three times a week), or incomplete. Constipation is usually caused lack of fiber in your diet, or a disruption of your regular routine or diet.

You can treat your constipation by:

  • Increasing the amount of fiber and water in your diet.
  • Exercising regularly and increasing the intensity of your exercises as tolerated.
  • Moving your bowels when you have the urge (resisting the urge causes constipation).

2) IRRITABLE  BOWEL SYNDROME ( IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (also called spastic colon, irritable colon, IBS) is a functional condition where your colon muscle contracts more or less often than “normal.” Certain foods, medicines, and emotional stress are some factors that can trigger IBS.

Symptoms of IBS include:

  • Abdominal pain and cramps.
  • Excess gas.
  • Bloating.
  • Change in bowel habits such as harder, looser, or more urgent stools than normal.
  • Alternating constipation and diarrhea.

3) HEMORRHOIDS

Hemorrhoids are dilated veins in the anal canal, a structural disease. They’re swollen blood vessels that line your anal opening. They are caused by chronic excess pressure from straining during a bowel movement, persistent diarrhea, or pregnancy. There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external.

Internal hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids are blood vessels on the inside of your anal opening. When they fall down into the anus as a result of straining, they become irritated and start to bleed. Ultimately, internal hemorrhoids can fall down enough to prolapse out of the anus.

External hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are veins that lie just under the skin on the outside of the anus. Sometimes, after straining, the external hemorrhoid veins burst and blood clots form under the skin. This very painful condition is called a “pile.”

4) ANAL FISSURE

Anal fissures are also structural diseases. They are splits or cracks in the lining of your anal opening. The most common cause of an anal fissure is the passage of very hard or watery stools. An anal fissure is one of the most painful problems because the exposed muscles become irritated from exposure to stool or air, and this leads to intense burning pain, bleeding, or spasm after bowel movements.

5) ANAL FISTULA

An anal fistula is a structural disease that follows the drainage of an abscess and is an abnormal tube-like passageway from the anal canal to a hole in the skin near the opening of your anus. Body wastes traveling through your anal canal are diverted through this tiny channel and out through the skin, causing itching and irritation. Fistulas also cause drainage, pain, and bleeding.

6) COLITIS

There are several types of colitis, which are conditions that cause inflammation of the bowel. These include:

  • Infectious colitis.
  • Ulcerative colitis.
  • Crohn's disease.
  • Ischemic colitis.
  • Radiation colitis (after radiotherapy).

Colitis causes diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps, and urgency (frequent and immediate need to empty the bowels). Treatment depends on the diagnosis, which is made by colonoscopy and biopsy.

7) GASTROESOPHAGEAL  REFLUX  DISEASE

When stomach acid backs up into your esophagus that condition is called acid reflux. you may feel a burning pain in the middle of your chest after meals or at night. The esophagus moves swallowed food down to your stomach. A ring of muscles called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) connects the stomach and esophagus. When the LES is weak, stomach acid can flow back up into your esophagus. This causes heartburn. Over time, this can cause serious damage to your esophagus.

To avoid –

  • Eat smaller meals
  • Do not lie down for 2 hours after eating. Also, do not eat within 2 hours of retiring for the night.
  • Avoid caffeine, spicy foods, fats, citrus, and other high-acid foods and juices.

8) GALLSTONES

Gallstones are hard deposits that form in your gallbladder. a small, pear-shaped sac that stores bile for digestion. this bile can form small, hard deposits called gallstones. Cholelithiasis is the medical term for gallstones. Some gallstones do not cause symptoms and go away on their own. Others can cause severe pain or infection. You may also have nausea, vomiting, and fever.

9) DIARRHOEA

Diarrhea means loose, watery, and possibly frequent bowel movements which is a common problem. It may be present alone or be associated with other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or weight loss. A number of diseases and conditions can cause diarrhea including Viruses. Bacteria and parasites,  Medications, Lactose intolerance, etc.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Symptoms include:

  • hiccups
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • indigestion
  • bloating
  • appetite loss
  • black stool due to bleeding in your stomach

COMMON CAUSES-

  • stress
  • bile reflux from your small intestine
  • excess alcohol consumption
  • chronic vomiting
  • bacterial or viral infections
  • pernicious anemia

PREVENTION

  • Lose weight if you’re overweight. Extra pounds put pressure on your stomach, forcing more acid up into your esophagus.
  • Wear loose clothing. Tight clothes that press on your stomach can trigger heartburn.
  • If you smoke, quit. Cigarette smoke relaxes the muscle that prevents acid from backing up into the esophagus. It also may increase how much acid your stomach makes.
  • Avoid high-impact exercise.
